...Creativity Center Launched...
Central Texas is the new home of the Great Expectations Creativity Center and Artist in Residence Program developed by Quilts, Inc., the producer of the largest quilt show in the United States, the International Quilt Festival/Houston. The center, which opened last summer, offers seminars, courses, programs, and events. It is located within a wildflower and wildlife sanctuary on 70 acres near LaGrange, Texas, and features a fully equipped conference and retreat facility with work space for 30 or more and dorm rooms. The artist-in-residence program will fund one- to three-week stays by invited guests--primarily in the fields of quilting, textile, and fiber arts--allowing uninterrupted focus on their artistic development, away from day-to-day concerns. 713-781-6864; www.quilts.com

...Cyril I. Nelson...
Cyril I. Nelson may be best remembered by quilt lovers as the originator and compiler of the Quilt Engagement Calendars, published between 1975 and 2001. These spiral-bound calendars, now considered collectors' items by some, featured hundreds of images of many of the best antique and contemporary quilts available at the time. Cy served as an editor for almost 50 years at E.P. Dutton Publishers (now Penguin Books USA). An active supporter and trustee of the American Folk Art Museum, he donated many of the antique quilts and coverlets that now comprise the museum's permanent collection in addition to other prize examples of paintings and portraits, painted furniture, and decorated boxes. He died on June 1 in Fairfield, Connecticut.
