Houston Announces Winners
in Special Challenge
A bittersweet remembrance of her aging mother brought top honors to Pat Kumicich for her quilt Rosemarie–Now and Then in the 2005 "I Remember Mama" contest at the International Quilt Festival/Houston in October.
The Naples, Florida, quiltmaker portrayed her mother both as a young woman and then as an elderly woman with a quilt over her knees. The words on the quilt describe the younger Marie as one who, among other things, loved to fish and play bingo, a woman who worked hard but found time to volunteer her services to others.
Carol Suto of San Leandro, California, placed second for Monday Morning 1955, shown on QNM's October Bulletin Board. Mary Beth Clark of South Elgin, Illinois, received third place for The Last Squeeze, her memory of the last hug she received at eight years of age before her mother's unexpected death.
Quilts from all three years of the "I Remember Mama" exhibits and the makers' statements are featured in the new publication by the same title from Primedia. 800-590-3465; www.VillageQuiltShoppe.com.
