Floral Delight, 101" x 102", 2005, by Wanda Weiser of Maxatawny Township, Pennsylvania.

Auction Price Record Broken
for Best of Show Quilt

Wanda Weiser's handmade quilt not only received the best of show ribbon at this July's Kutztown Festival Quilt Auction in Pennsylvania, but this win broke new ground for Wanda and the auction.

Bidding on Wanda's Floral Delight–sometimes in $500 increments–rose until a record bid of $15,500 sealed the deal for Joyce Byer of Bucks County.

This was the fourth time in five years that this Kutztown resident has received the highest bid for her work. Of the nearly 2,500 quilts for sale, only 24 were selected for the auction that attracted a crowd of approximately 350 people. The second-highest price paid for a quilt was $2,100, and most of the others went for between about $700 and $1,200.

Wanda has been quilting for 10 years, and she says that she spent five months making the quilt with help from two Mennonite neighbors. The stay-at-home mother of three was "absolutely thrilled" with her success and plans to give some of the profit from her quilt to the Leukemia Society in memory of her father.
