QNM Honors Quiltmaker
in Yokohama
The governing committee of International Quilt Week Yokohama once again invited Quilter's Newsletter Magazine to select the winner for the Excellence in Quiltmaking award at its show in November 2005.
This is the ninth time the magazine has chosen the winner for one of the top prizes given at this Japanese festival.
Although the other quilts competing for the award were also deemed "amazing," the detailed design of Labyrinth (below), 83" x 83", by Keiko Hasegawa of Nara, Japan, was ultimately selected by the QNM staff. Keiko's was one of more than 200 in the judged competition; in all, the show featured more than 1,100 entries from around the world including contemporary quilts from Turkey and Inuit quilts from Canada. Additionally, twelve Canadian art quilters had their quilts on display including Karen Colburne Martin of St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador, who showed As Seen with the Listening Heart (bottom), 38" x 27", finished in 2003.
The annual show is sponsored by a leading quilt magazine in Japan, Patchwork Quilt Tsushin. For information about the 2006 show, contact Quilt Week Executive Committee, c/o Patchwork Tsushin Co., Ltd. Fax +81-3-3816-4467; www.viq.com/english/iqw/yokohama/iqwy.htm
