Ami's Alzheimer's Assistance

Quiltmaker, author, and humorist Ami Simms brings a serious message to quilters with the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative she's organized to raise awareness and fund research to find a cure for the disease.

First, an exhibit of 50 juried invitational quilts offering interpretations of various aspects of the disease will travel to major quilting events, museums, quilt guild exhibitions, and other public venues for three years. The first public showing of "Alzheimer's: Forgetting Piece by Piece," will be at the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza in Harrisburg, September 7-10, followed by an exhibition across the country at Pacific International Quilt Festival, October 12-15, in Santa Clara, California.

Next, Ami invites wider participation by encouraging people to make or purchase mini art quilts, no larger than 9" x 12". All proceeds from the sale of these quilts, to be shown on Ami's website, will be donated to Alzheimer's research, and entrants will have the opportunity to win a new Aurora 440QE sewing machine donated by Bernina of America.

As of January 1 of this year, the initiative had raised more than $1,700. Ami has been joined by other quilt designers such as Georgia Bonesteel, Elsie Campbell, Linda Carlson, Melody Crust, Diane Gaudynski, and Piece O' Cake to increase the involvement of the quilting community in the project.
