Quilting for a Cause
Takes Center Stage
in October

There's no shortage of ways in which individual quilters and groups distinguish themselves as being charitable and giving, but none perhaps makes as big an impact as the work done on behalf of breast cancer-related causes. This month we single out just a few of the efforts that have helped to draw attention to the need to conquer an all too common diagnosis.

Arizona: On October 14, the nonprofit group Quilt for a Cause in Tucson hopes to raise more than $100,000 with its quilt auction for the Tucson Medical Center Foundation's Joel Childers Teaching Series and other local breast cancer causes. Quilts from around the country have been donated, including works from such name quilters as Sara Nephew, Blanche Young, Janine Holzman, Freddy Moran, Jackie Robinson, and former Quiltmaker editor and award-winning artist Sherri Bain Driver, now a Tucson resident, who donated Midnight Star (below), 45" x 45", made in 2002. quiltforacause.org

Northern California: Every three years, quilt guilds in the area around the Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento come together to sponsor a quilt auction that raises funds for the research and treatment of breast cancer. Fourteen guilds contributed more than 700 quilts to the third auction held in 2005, so many, in fact, that quilts were sold both in a silent as well as a live auction. The first auction raised $57,000 from the sale of 224 quilts. The 2005 auction and sale took in approximately $150,000, including $5,300 raised from the sale of Blue Diamond (below, photo courtesy Gloria Schroeter), 86" x 86", a group quilt made by the Quilt Eaters. suttermedicalcenter.com/philanthropy

Canada: The active The Quilt: A Breast Cancer Support Project will once again hold a number of fundraising events including its quilt auction in Toronto on October 24. Last year, more than 400 guests attended the event, and the group raised almost $80,000. The group is working with Princess Margaret Hospital to frame a national program that will offer clinical support for women and also be part of a research project. thequilt.com

Colorado: See the October 2006 issue of our sister publication McCall's Quilting for three ways for individuals and groups to help find a cure based on its 2006 breast cancer awareness project. The pattern for a quilt designed by Luana Rubin entitled Nana's Rose Garden is given in the magazine. The 83" x 83" quilt uses fabrics from Luana's line called Joie de Vivre printed by Robert Kaufman Fabrics (see the article Think Pink in the October '06 issue of QNM). mccallsquilting.com
