Hilary Morrow Fletcher

Hilary Morrow Fletcher, director of the biennial Quilt National, died on August 11. The staff of QNM learned of her passing as we went to press.

Hilary was "the heart and soul" of the organization says her colleague Karey Bresenhan, president and cofounder of Quilts, Inc. "She was dedicated to art quilts." Hilary became project director of Quilt National at the Dairy Barn in Athens, Ohio, in 1982, and was an active art quilt collector herself and a board member of Studio Arts Quilts Alliance (SAQA).

Frequently called upon to lecture and write about art quilts, Hilary was a driving force behind Quilt National’s attainment of international status in the art quilt movement. In a piece called "Art Quilts in Perspective" Hilary wrote, "There is no question that the art form has been enhanced by thousands of quiltmakers making personal journeys through explorations of color, shape, and line. I feel quite confident that through the continued creative efforts of the world’s quiltmakers, the art quilt as we know it, will continue to evolve and enrich the lives of an ever widening circle of appreciative viewers."

Just 64, Hilary had planned to retire after the 2007 Quilt National but succumbed to cancer before she was able to achieve that goal.

Hilary’s family requests that in lieu of other tributes, contributions be made to the Hilary Morrow Fletcher Trust for Quilt National, The Dairy Barn Cultural Arts Center, 8000 Dairy Lane (P.O. Box 747), Athens, OH 45701. dairybarn.org
