Alliance Offers Housing
Project for First Contest
An international group of 74 quilters submitted a diverse group of entries to the first contest sponsored by the Alliance for American Quilts.
Contest rules allowed quilters to include whatever they wanted on the surface of the 15" x 19 1/2" house-shaped quilts for the "Put a Roof Over Our Head" challenge. The resulting entries were displayed during the summer in various downtown businesses in Asheville, North Carolina, to draw attention to the Alliance's recent move there. After being shown at other venues around the country until December 2007, the quilts will be auctioned to support the Alliance's various projects.
Alliance members voted for and determined the winners of the contest and the results were announced by board member and curator Karen Musgrave in August. The first place prize of a Bernina Aurora 440 QE sewing machine, donated by Bernina USA, was awarded to a group quilt from the country of Georgia. Second place was given to Ann Holmes of Asheville, North Carolina, and third went to Ellen Levine, also of Asheville.
