This pattern for the Crystal Star block appeared in a 1934 issue of the Kansas City Star. The instructions read, "This is a pattern that the most inexperienced quilt maker may use with confidence. Use any two colors desired ...Lemon yellow and green are good choices. Allow for seams."
Ruby Short McKim (1891-1976), author of One Hundred and One Patchwork Patterns (1931, reprinted by Dover in 1962).

Kansas City Star Quilts
Offers Vintage Patterns
The Kansas City Star newspaper published 1,068 quilt patterns between 1928 and 1961. Today, Kansas City Star Quilts is redrafting them all and making them available to pattern collectors and history buffs. For a $20 annual fee, subscribers to "My Star Collection" will receive, among other things, one pattern each week. The patterns will be distributed randomly, not in chronological order.
The annual fee also buys subscribers access to Kansas City Star's online quilt pattern database, which includes a photo of each pattern, the month and year of its publication, and the name of its designer. Special offers, discounts, and programs, such as block-of-the-month projects, will also be included with each subscription.
Ruby Short McKim (below) was the original quilt artist for the newspaper. She drafted their patterns from 1928 until 1931, and she created many others that she offered through her mail-order studio. pickledish.com
