Susquehanna Compass
Another Direction

A complete pattern for Irene Berry's quilt, Susquehanna Compass, is given in the September Quilter's Newsletter Magazine (No. 365). This QNM web extra provides another option for creating all those pieced Pennsylvania-type of blocks! A group from the QNM, Quiltmaker, and McCall's staffs participated in a block exchange, inspired by a beautiful reproduction of an 1830s quilt. Sherri Driver, Senior Editor at Quiltmaker, devised this method for strip-piecing a set of Pennsylvania blocks. The individual patches differ slightly from the block in the pattern printed in the magazine, but the overall appearance is the same. With careful cutting, a fat quarter of print fabric and a 7" x 21" strip of muslin will make 8 blocks.

From the print fabric, cut one strip 3 1/2" x 21", 3 strips 2" x 21", and 2 strips 1 1/4" x 21". From the muslin, cut 1 strip 2" x 21" and 4 strips 1 1/4" x 21". Referring to the diagrams, arrange the strips into 3 bands as shown. Stitch the strips together and press the seam allowances toward the print fabric. Cut 8 units 2" wide from Band A, 16 units 1 1/4" wide from Band B, and 16 units 1 1/4" wide from Band C. Referring to the block assembly diagram, use these units to sew 8 blocks.
