Oh My

Nancy S. Brown says that The Wizard of Oz is her favorite movie, although its only association with this 46" x 48" quilt is the famous line, "Lions and tigers and bears--Oh, my! " The Oakland, California, quiltmaker wanted to make a quilt with some hand appliqued close-up portraits of animals. While trying to decide between lions and tigers as her subject, she realized that if she added bears, she could do all three.

The biggest technical challenge presented by her design was making the white tiger--necessary for contrast--stand out against the background of patchwork snow. The borders are appliqued with imaginary vines crisscrossing the quilt and the footprints of bears and big cats. Photo courtesy Mancuso Show Management.
