Building Blocks
for Young Quilters
Patchwork Magic from the September 2005 (#375) issue of QNM introduced the joys of quiltmaking to the younger generation. Download the PDF file or print the block diagrams below for four more blocks for sewing with children. If the September 2005 issue of QNM is no longer available at your local quilt shop, order online at www.villagequiltshoppe.com.
When you're introducing a youngster to the joys of patchwork, have a variety of simple block patterns to choose from. Start with designs made up of squares and rectangles, and draft the block in a large size. A 12" nine-patch block, for instance, will divide into 4"-square patches, a size that's easy for small fingers to manipulate. Don't forget to add 1/2" to the dimensions of each patch for the seam allowance. And do watch that rotary cutter; even with the guard in place, it's not childproof!
Try these 12" blocks.
