Looking Back:
Pieced Backing of the
Brothers & Sisters Quilt

The quilt Brothers & Sisters, shown in the December issue of QNM (No. 378), was made by Janine Holzman of Sitka, Alaska. Janine duplicated the block imagery used on the front of the quilt, and made one over-sized block for the backing, shown below.

For a truly unified design, front and back, consider taking a patch shape from the patchwork on the quilt top and using it to create a backing fabric. You might even piece one of the blocks from the front on a grand scale to form the back. Piecing the backing is also a great use of the leftover fabrics from the blocks or larger cuts of fabric in your stash that just aren't big enough by themselves to make a backing.

See the December 2005 issue for the complete quilt pattern. If you missed that issue, order a copy online at www.village quiltshoppe.com.
