Photo Finish:
Ancient Pines

Machine and hand embroidery, stenciling, stuffed work, and beading are the techniques Jan Rashid of La Jolla, California, chose to enhance her depiction of the Pinus torreyana. "Torrey pines are rare, ancient trees," Jan writes, "that are almost extinct in North America. One of only two places where they survive is the Torrey Pines State Reserve, north of San Diego. There, along the seacoast, the sandstone cliffs erode around their roots. They are stressed by drought and insects and are buffeted by constant ocean winds into strange, stunted shapes."

She adds, "I find great beauty in their twisted, windswept forms, and inspiration in their tenacity and ability to survive." The 38" x 47" piece was completed in 2004.

See Photo Finish in the March 2006 issue of QNM for a larger printed image of the complete quilt. If you missed that issue, order a back issue online at www.villagequiltshoppe.com.
