Tools I'd Like To Try

by Nancy Breland

QNM has been reviewing new products available to quilters in the article "Shop Talk" in every issue, but what about products you would like to see in the marketplace? Here are some products that I'd like to try:

  • Stash Shrinker Fabric Conditioner. Throw one of these sweet-smelling sheets into the dryer when you wash quilting fabric. The product will reduce the fabric to half its thickness. Only a light touch with a steam iron is required to reconstitute the fabric to its original size.
  • Flavored Thread. When you lick the end of this thread before threading a needle, it tastes good.
  • Self-Healing Rotary Cutter Blades. Whenever you nick this blade by running over a pin or into your ruler, the nick would close up.
  • Expanding-Eye Quilting Needles. Touch the needle's eye end to a hot iron and the eye gets larger. When cool, the eye returns to normal size.
  • Quilt Show Glasses. These have magnification that allows you to see quilting stitches from a distance.
  • "Excuse Me" Signaling Device. This fob for your keychain emits a pleasant "beep beep" to alert viewers at a crowded quilt show to step aside, please.
My Ideal Sewing Computer inspires another dream list. Here are some buttons I'd like to have on my machine:
  • Mute button for bobbin winder
  • Undo button that will remove stitches just sewn
  • Insert button for set-in seams
  • Seam Allowance Up and Seam Allowance Down buttons
  • Pause, Shift, Alt, and Escape keys to redirect my attention to my sewing
  • Control for working with knits or slippery fabrics
  • Cut to trim the end threads flush with the fabric
  • Stitch Counter set to zero for each new project
  • Switch display screen on your quilting computer so that you can easily view your email, the weather, or quiltersnewsletter.com while you work.
