Photo Finish: Black, White and Wild

Look closely at this herd of zebras and you'll see 18 different creatures, all of which live around zebras in the wild. Christine Bryden, of Mosheim, Tennessee, says, "During a television program about Africa, the screen was filled with a herd of zebras. The image was so striking that I just had to make a quilt."

In addition to the machine embroidery that subtly depicts the surrounding animals, Christine painted realistic details on the 57" x 52" pieced and appliqued quilt, completed in 2004. "This is the first black-and-white quilt I've ever made," she adds. "I plan to do a series based on this design." Photo by Mellisa Karlin Mahoney.
