Easy Miters

Fold each border strip to find the middle. Align the center of a border and the center of the quilt top. Sew the border strip to the quilt, stopping 1/4" from the raw edge of the quilt (Fig. 1). Repeat for the other 3 sides, stopping the lines of stitching at exactly the same spot in each corner, as shown by the dot in Fig. 1.

Press the border strips away from the quilt. Place the quilt right side facing up on a large flat surface that has been covered with a towel. (Be sure that the surface won't be damaged by the heat of the iron.) Position the border along the lower edge on top of the side borders (Fig. 2).

Fold the bottom border under itself to form a 45-degree diagonal fold (Fig. 3). Place a square acrylic ruler in the corner to be certain that the quilt's corner is square. Press the diagonal fold and pin in place. Don't pin through the towel. Hand stitch the fold with an applique stitch and matching thread (Fig. 4). Trim.

At the right corner, fold the horizontal border under itself in the other direction to form the same kind of angle (Fig. 5). Press, pin, stitch, and trim as before. Turn the quilt around, and repeat with the remaining corners.
