Photo Finish: Life in Harmony
with Earth and Green
Harumi Asada traveled from her home in Aichi, Japan, to Jessore, Bangladesh, to learn about Nakshi Kantha. "Nakshi means designed," Harumi says, "and Kantha means quilt." Made from discarded clothing, Nakshi Kantha are heavily embroidered quilts intended for both utilitarian and ceremonial purposes. The needlework style almost died out, but renewed interest in elaborate Kantha should generate income and lead to better lives for Bangladeshi women.
For her 78" x 79" quilt, completed in 2005, Harumi combined photographs of Bangladeshi people with traditional Kantha design. Photo by Mellisa Karlin Mahoney.
