Stencils and Sponges:
Copyright-free Images

In the October 2006 issue of QNM, we presented Melody Randol's technique for stenciling images onto quilts. Two copyright-free images were given in the article. To find additional images, look for Heck's Pictorial Archive of Nature and Science, edited by J. G. Heck (Dover Publications Inc., 1994) and Wild and Domestic Animals (Dover, 2002) at your local bookseller.

Enlarge the image to the desired size using image-editing software or using a copy machine. Make four copies of the image on freezer paper. To make stencils, cut out the image outline from one copy and then cut out interior sections from the remaining copies. Remember that the pieces removed from the printed image will create painted areas on the background fabric.

If the October 2006 issue is no longer available at your local quilt store, order a copy online at www.VillageQuiltShoppe.com.
