Let's Talk Templates
Will My Template-Pieced Quilt Be Unique?

There are several simple ways to make a unique quilt that is pieced with templates.

  • Add sashing, with or without cornerstones (the contrasting squares where sashing strips appear to intersect).
  • Alternate the template-pieced blocks with open blocks (plain squares of fabric) or simple blocks like a Four Patch, Nine Patch, Snowball block, or Square-in-a-Square.
  • Set the blocks on point and add interesting quilting motifs or applique patches in the setting squares.
  • Use a fun large-scale or striped print to make a border as wide as the block so you can add a block in each corner of the quilt.
  • Borrow a patch from the template set to piece a border of your own design that will complement the quilt center.
Whatever you decide, a template set can be a great springboard for trying your hand at quilt design.

The Let's Talk Templates lesson series appears in the November and December 2006, and January 2007 issues of QNM. If those issues are no longer available in your local quilt shop, order copies online at www.VillageQuiltShoppe.com.
