Oil & Cloth
Paintstix on Fabric

In our December 2006 issue, we presented Shelly Stokes's article "Oil and Cloth: Paintstiks on Fabric." Presented here are a few more exclusive tips on using Paintstiks.

  • To keep your fabric from moving, tape it to your work surface or use a no-slip mat, such as the Grip-n-Grip mat from Bear Thread Designs.
  • To get a clean image, use a light touch when applying the paint. Hold your fabric down with one hand and apply the Paintstik color in one direction, away from the hand securing the fabric.
  • Pick up any excess bits of Paintstik color with a piece of masking tape or a lint roller.
  • Wipe the end of your Paintstik with a paper towel to remove bits of skin as you work.
  • Do not apply Paintstik color to stamps. There is not enough liquid in the paint to transfer an image to fabric unless a solvent is added. Instead, use stamps as rubbing plates, image side up under the fabric.

See the December 2006 issue of QNM for more information on using Paintstiks on fabric. If that issue is no longer available in your local quilt shop, order copies online at www.VillageQuiltShoppe.com.
