The Great, Great Grans Quilt
In "Color As I See It" in the April 2007 issue of QNM, Roberta Horton explains that exposure to a color experience often inspires a quilt. One example is Roberta's The Great, Great Grans Quilt, 54" x 54", made in 2006 and hand quilted by Janet Dollard.
Roberta attended a family reunion in Brooksville, Mississippi, that included treks to cemeteries in the backwoods and old houses once occupied by her family. Then she saw Judy Martin's Carolina Basket block pattern in the July/August 2005 issue of QNM. Noting that three of her great-great-grandparents were born in South Carolina, and with a collection of 1830s to 1850s reproduction fabrics on hand, the quilt just came together. "I couldn't stop myself," Roberta says with a smile. "What a joy it was to use my understanding of color to make this quilt."
When you look at The Great, Great Grans Quilt, be sure to notice the photographs of Roberta's ancestors in the centers of the corner blocks.
