Cocheco Friendship
Stress-free Signatures

Who needs the pressure that comes with writing your signature prettily on a completed quilt block? Even when you're signing an unsewn scrap of fabric it's difficult to get a perfect result on the first try. Instead, have each person in your group use a dark ink pen to sign a sheet of paper that you've marked with several spaces exactly the finished size of the signature patch. That way everyone can practice a bit until they are happy with their signature.

The next step is to cut the patches and trace the signatures on them. It will be much easier to write on the fabric if you press it onto freezer paper first. Tape the signed paper on a light box or a sunlit window and tape your fabric on top of it. For the Cocheco Friendship pattern in QNM issue 393, it's especially important to consider the signature's orientation. The central square in the signature block is on point, with the writing crossing it diagonally. Use a permanent ink pen to trace each signature onto the fabric.

Here's a tip: If you're collecting signatures by mail, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

If the June 2007 issue of QNM is no longer available in your local quilt shop, order a copy online at www.VillageQuiltShoppe.com.
