Photo Finish
Polar Prowler

By Patricia M. Goffette

To create this 51" x 71" portrait, Pat first drew a full-size cartoon of the outline of the bear. The Edmonds, Washington, quilter assembled the figure first, achieving realism with hand applique and commercially available fabrics only. When making her animal quilts, Pat studies her subject in depth. She always reads at least three books about the creature before she feels ready to undertake the improvisational construction of the background setting. Of the polar bear, Pat says, "He roams the North Pole, usually alone, for months on end. Though he looks intriguing, do keep your distance, or you will find out what you are to him.
